Wealth and Poverty
Melbourne is a beautiful place full of wonderful sights and culture. It is a city that has welcomed immigrants from around the world, some come with little money but others not so much. But, Melbourne was affected positively economically and socially with the increase of immigrants, this forced new jobs and also brought new culture to the city which added diversity. The first people who lived here were the Kulin nation who survive around 30,000 years from fishing, hunting and gathering. Melbourne become so rich because of the gold rush. It started in 1981 and brought many immigrants arriving from sea. This brought wealth to Melbourne. More than £100 million worth of gold was achieved in the 1850s. But, Melbourne also faced poverty just like every other city. In 2010, 12.8% of people living in Australia were labelled under the poverty line this included 575,000 children. Australians were faced with low income, between 13% to 14% of people living in Australia have had low incomes each year.

- The City of Melbourne has a program called the 1200 Buildings Program. This program removes any financial barriers to improve the energy efficiency of buildings such as offices and homes. This program encourages people to make their electricity such as air conditioning more fuel efficient since they can do it for cheaper prices.

HOW WILL THESE CONDITIONS impact as the climate changes?
For the past few decades, Melbourne has undergone several significant climate changes. The impacts of climate change have been a lot more evident in this coastal city of Southern Australia because of its proximity to the ocean. And so, the government has developed many different legislatures and procedures to encourage the citizens of the city to reduce their negative environmental impacts. The city is already striving with the policy of carbon tax, citizens use more eco-friendly modes of transportations like bicycles, building more ‘green’ infrastructures, etc. Climate is expected to continue to change however, the government of Victoria has already anticipated and put to action, many plans and programs have been put to place. Therefore, I believe there will not be much change in the lifestyle because Melbourne’s current lifestyle was reformed to be very eco-friendly already. If matters such as the lack of freshwater supplies or production of greenhouse gases get out of hand, the government will reinforce new policies that control things such as efficient uses of freshwater or the price carbon taxes.

This proposal is beneficial as it can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Melbourne, Australia and reduce warming temperatures. Also, reduced GHG emissions will create a more eco-friendly environment therefore, prevent many issues related to climate changes that effect many living things in the area. Proper funding is required for this solution as cleaner and low-emissions technologies tend to be expensive however, provide better air quality in atmosphere and may reduce climate change.
